Interestingly, the least expensive version is the diesel Q5 Sportback rather than the conventional SUV. The Q5 SUV starts with the more powerful 200 kW petrol engine, while the Sportback gives buyers the widest choice of powertrains.

Three engines for South African buyers

2.0 TDI: the long-distance option

The Q5 Sportback TDI uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 150 kW and 400 Nm. Audi’s global technical data lists a 0–100 km/h time of 7.4 seconds and combined fuel consumption between 5.9 and 6.7 L/100 km, depending on equipment and conditions.

This derivative should appeal to drivers covering long highway distances, but the South African range currently restricts the diesel engine to the Sportback body style.

2.0 TFSI: the core petrol model

The 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine delivers 200 kW and 400 Nm. Audi claims the TFSI can accelerate from 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, making the regular Q5 considerably quicker than many midsize family SUVs.

This engine is available in both SUV and Sportback forms and is likely to be the most balanced choice for buyers who want strong performance without moving to the SQ5.

3.0 V6 TFSI: the SQ5 performance model

The flagship SQ5 uses a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine producing 270 kW and 550 Nm. It reaches 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5 seconds and adds S sport suspension.

Compared with the previous South African SQ5, output has increased from 260 kW and 500 Nm. Adaptive S air suspension is available for buyers wanting a broader range between comfort and dynamic driving.

A completely redesigned digital cabin

The dashboard is built around a curved panoramic display combining an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touchscreen. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen uses a privacy mode so content should not distract the driver.

Standard comfort and connectivity equipment across the local range includes:

  • MMI navigation plus with Audi Connect services
  • Audi Application Store
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Electrically adjustable sport seats
  • Electric tailgate

Optional Tech Plus and Tech Pro packages allow buyers to add more equipment, but the final price can rise quickly. A complete configured quotation is therefore more useful than comparing base prices alone.

Driver assistance and exterior changes

The new Q5 receives a more upright grille, slimmer headlights, functional air curtains and a stronger shoulder line. At the rear, the lighting can display different digital signatures, depending on specification.

S line specification is standard and includes adaptive cruise control, Park Assist Plus, surround-view cameras and LED lighting. The S line Black versions add dark exterior details, privacy glass, black roof rails and a panoramic sunroof.

Adaptive air suspension is optional on the Q5. It can adjust the vehicle’s ride height and damping through Audi drive select, which may be useful for buyers balancing poor road surfaces with more dynamic driving.

Q5 SUV or Q5 Sportback?

The conventional Q5 SUV has the more practical roofline and should offer the easier luggage-loading shape. The Sportback sacrifices some rear-roof height for a more coupe-like appearance and is the only body style available with the diesel engine.

  • Choose the Q5 SUV for maximum everyday practicality and the simpler petrol line-up.
  • Choose the Q5 Sportback TDI if long-distance economy is important.
  • Choose the Q5 TFSI for strong performance without paying SQ5 prices.
  • Choose the SQ5 if acceleration and V6 performance are the priority.

Freeway Plan and finance considerations

Every new Q5 and SQ5 includes Audi South Africa’s five-year/100,000 km Freeway Plan. Buyers should confirm the separate warranty terms, optional plan extensions and what is excluded before delivery.

Audi Assured finance uses a guaranteed future value structure. This can reduce the advertised monthly payment, but it comes with mileage and vehicle-condition requirements. At the end of the agreement, the buyer generally chooses whether to return, trade or retain the vehicle by settling the guaranteed future value.

Compare the cash price, deposit, interest rate, contract term, guaranteed future value and total cost before deciding. Optional extras should also be included in the same written quotation.

Looking for something more affordable?

The Q5 is positioned firmly in the premium market. South African buyers working with a smaller budget can compare our current selection of new cars below R250,000.

Early verdict

The new Q5 brings a substantial technology and performance upgrade to Audi’s South African SUV range. The 200 kW petrol engine gives the standard model unusually strong performance, while the diesel Sportback offers a long-distance alternative and the 270 kW SQ5 competes as a genuine performance SUV.

With prices ranging from R1,275,000 to R1,635,000 before options, buyers should compare body style, engine and equipment carefully. The least expensive derivative will not necessarily be the best fit once fuel use, luggage space and optional packages are considered.
